SIE ABET Program Mission Statement

The mission of the University of Arizona can be summarized in the following statement:

"The University of Arizona, a public land-grant, research institution, is dedicated to preparing students for an increasingly diverse and technological world and to improving the quality of life for the people of Arizona and the Nation. The University provides distinguished undergraduate, graduate, and professional education; excels in basic and applied research and creative achievement and integrates these activities and achievements of regional, national, and international significance into everyday life."

To complement the University mission, the College of Engineering and Mines (COEM) proposes the following mission statement:

"Through excellence in education, research, and in partnership with industry, government and the citizens of Arizona, we will continuously improve the way we serve our students and other customers, educate for lifelong learning, and advance strategic technologies."

The educational objective of the COEM is:

"To continuously improve the undergraduate academic programs in partnership with industry, alumni, and government. The College will strive to provide high quality broad based education that will prepare students for productive careers in an increasingly diverse and technological society. This education will provide a foundation for lifelong learning to nature personal and professional growth. The basis for this education will be knowledge of engineering and science tools that are appropriate for their disciplines."

The above statements emphasize high quality education to prepare students for learning, using, and developing advanced technologies. The Systems and Industrial Engineering (SIE) Department stands solidly behind these mission statements and educational objectives, and proposes its own mission in support of University and College goals. The mission includes statements concerning the three areas of teaching, research, and service and we state the relevant portion on education here:

"To provide high quality education, and a basis for lifelong learning of the engineering and scientific knowledge required for analysis, design, improvement, and evaluation of integrated systems of people, computers, material, and equipment - as embodied in the disciplines of industrial engineering, operations research, and systems engineering, and like fields."

The department mission is central to the mission of land-grant universities, and parallels and responds directly to the vision and missions of the University of Arizona and the COEM.
