A Center Director manages administrative functions of the Center. The Director is assisted by an Assistant Director and a team of staff members including an administrative assistant, a secretary, and a software engineer. Research and educational functions are the responsibility of teams of faculty members and students. When possible and necessary, visiting faculty and researchers are involved in research and teaching. To draw upon the best available expertise in the thrust areas of the Center, it should be noted that faculty members associated with ATLAS include faculty at the University of Arizona as well as elsewhere in the nation. The Center conducts two types of research projects (1) basic research and (2) applied research. A basic research project will typically involve a single investigator and a graduate student, and the expected results would be publishable algorithms or methods that may be used in traffic or logistics management systems.
Applied research projects typically involve multiple investigators and one or two graduate students. Its expected deliverable would be both a publishable result, and software or a system_that may be submitted to an agency/firm for further evaluation (e.g. field testing). Center educational projects include (1) course development, (2) curriculum development, (3) instructional lab development, and (4) workshops/conferences. A limited number of scholarships may be awarded for practicing engineers and managers to attend workshops/conferences and short courses provided by the Center.
