BAE Degree: Focus and Complementary
The main portion of the Bachelor of Arts in Engineering degree consists of your focus and complementary courses. These courses can be from specific departments or themed to fit your personal interests. All courses must be approved by your advisor.
Focus Area
The focus area of the BAE, your main field of study, is a set of 24 credits (approximately 8 courses). Example focus areas include the traditional fields of Engineering (Aerospace, Computer, Industrial, Mechanical, Chemical, Systems, etc.) or themed topics such as Artificial Intelligence or Software Design.
Complementary Area
The complementary area of the BAE consists of 12 cresits (approximately 4 courses) in a different (non-technical) than your focus area. Complementary areas should be fields in which your engineering studies could apply to in a career. Example complementary areas include Music, Graphic Design, Business, Finance, Psychology, Anthropology, and many other fields.
BAE Electives
These electives are courses that mix Engineering/Technical fields with another field of study. The requirement is 9 credits (approximately 3 courses). A list of suggested courses can be found here (opens new window).
Senior Project
During the last semester of your senior year, you create a project (as approved by your advisor) that utilizes your knowledge obtained from your focus and complementary areas. Each project is unique to you.
