
In 1965 the Army and Navy sent a group of officers to the Systems Engineering Program at the University of Arizona to learn about systems engineering and earn Master of Science degrees. On April 6, 2007 the group reunited after 40 years to visit the SIE department and share the success they have had as military and business professionals.
SIE and ECE have joined Team Scorpion together with Raytheon, Tucson Embedded Systems, Preferred Chassis, and iRobot to complete in the 2007 Urban Challenge by autonomously driving a vehicle 60 miles through an urban transportation system. Dr. Kucukyavuz recently completed her PhD in Industrial Engineering and Operations Research from The University of California at Berkeley. She brings expertise in integer programming, Computational Optimization, and applications such as network design, supply chain management and logistics to the SIE Department. Welcome to SIE!
Suvrajeet Sen (SIE Department, University of Arizona) was recently recognized as a Fellow of INFORMS. This award recognizes INFORMS members who made significant contributions to the advancement of the fields of Operations Research and Management Science. This is a very select group, consisting of a total of only 181 fellows, in a world-wide organization consisting of over 12,000 members.
The National Science Foundation released a report ranking the University of Arizona 21st among all US universities and 14th among public universities. The UA recorded almost half a billion dollars in research expenditure in 2004.
SIE students, staff, and faculty congratulated professors Wei Hua Lin and Young Jun Son on their recent promotion to the rank of Associate Professor. Congratulations!!
Dr. Bayraksan recently completed her PhD in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Son and graduate students received the best paper award in the 2005 IIE Annual Conference.
Dr. Son received the IIE Outstanding Young Industrial Engineer Award.
On April 29, 2005 a team of three students from the SIE Department traveled to The University of Virginia to participate in the 2005 IEEE Systems and Design Symposium - is a student - focused international forum for applied research, development, and design in Systems and Information Engineering.
Dr. Leo Lopes, Assistant Professor in SIE department was honored by the local newspaper "Arizona Daily Wildcat".
