University of Arizona, 1127 East James E. Rogers Way, Engineering Building #20, P.O. Box 210020, Tucson, Arizona 85721-0020 USA
Application for Admission: The final section on this sheet lists the materials which are to be submitted to the Graduate College and to the SIE Department. For the Graduate College, see http://grad.admin.arizona.edu/gradadm/application.html. For the SIE Department, see www.sie.arizona.edu .
Application Fee: An application fee of US $50 must be submitted with your application materials to the Graduate College in order for them to be processed. Applicants may petition the Graduate College to have the application fee deferred until enrollment ONLY if they are from Hungary, Liberia, Poland, Tunisia, the USSR, or Zimbabwe.
Deadlines: Complete application dossiers from domestic applicants must be received by the Graduate College no later than June 1 for the summer and fall semesters and October 1 for the spring semester. However, since most SIE faculty members are not here during the summer, it is advisable to submit your application well ahead of time. Complete application dossiers from international applicants must be received by the Graduate College no later than December 1 for the summer and fall semesters and June 1 for the spring semester.
Test Scores: Official transcripts of current GRE scores must be submitted to the SIE Department. Only the general GRE scores are essential. Minimum entrance requirements are scores of 500 verbal, 700 quantitative, and 650 analytical or 3.5 for Masters’ program and 500 verbal, 750 quantitative and 700/5.0 analytical for PhD program. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries must submit TOEFL scores to the Graduate College (at least 575 is required), unless they already hold a degree from an English-speaking university. Persons who are resident aliens in the United States are considered to be domestic applicants and need not submit TOEFL scores.
Letter of Intent: Please submit a letter addressed to the Chairman of the Graduate Committee in the SIE Department. The letter should be less than two pages in length and describe your personal objectives in pursuing an advanced degree in our program. This is an occasion to tell us something about yourself, your goals in life, and your future career, and to provide us with information that we might not be able to obtain from official transcripts and other documents.
Letters of Recommendation: These recommendations are written by former professors or other people who have direct information about your academic background. There is no special form for these letters, which should be addressed to the Chairman of the Graduate Committee in the SIE Department. Just ask the professors to write letters on the official letterhead of the university with which they are associated. Please send three letters of recommendation.
Transcripts: Applicants must submit official transcripts and official certification of degrees to the Graduate College and to the department. The minimum entrance requirement is a grade point average of 3.00 on the last 60 units of course work.
Assistantships: To apply for a graduate teaching assistantship, an “Application for Graduate Assistantship” form must be completed and submitted, along with your application materials, to the Chairman of the Graduate Committee in the SIE Department. Assistantships are awarded on a competitive basis after the applications of those admitted to our program are reviewed. An excellent knowledge of spoken English is required. To be awarded an assistantship, international applicants must pass the Test of Spoken English (TSE) with a score of 50 or the SPEAK test with a score of 230. Those who are awarded an assistantship will be notified by letter as soon as decisions are made. Those acquiring an assistantship must register for at least 12 units each semester the assistantship is held.
Financial Guarantee: International students are required to submit to the Graduate College a financial guarantee statement (the “supplemental application”) as part of their application for a visa to the United States.
Changing the Entry Term: Students who have submitted applications but who cannot begin graduate study in the semester for which they have been admitted may request to have the admission file “updated” to a later time. The Graduate College allows ONLY ONE such update. If you cannot meet that second admission date, a new application and application fee will be required. If postponing the beginning of graduate study is unavoidable, it is very important that you inform the Graduate College and the SIE Department in writing. After a certain period of time, application materials are destroyed and the entire admissions process has to be repeated.
Non-Degree Students: Under special circumstances, applicants or graduate students who do not maintain an adequate grade point average may register for courses as non-degree students. The Graduate College allows only 12 units of course work earned on non-degree status to be used toward meeting the requirements for an advanced degree from this university.
Application Process: The speed with which applications can be processed depends greatly on the prompt submission of all required materials. Applicants who receive requests from the Graduate College for required documents that were not included in the application packets should realize that their applications usually cannot proceed to the department until these documents have been received and processed by the Graduate College. Once the completed application is received by the SIE Department for review, a decision on admissions status is usually made within four to six weeks.
