What is OR/MS

Operations Research (OR) and Managament Sciences (MS) is an interdisciplinary branch of applied mathematics or formal science which uses methods like mathematical modeling, statistics, and algorithms to arrive at optimal or good decisions in complex problems which are concerned with optimizing the maxima (profit, faster assembly line, greater crop yield, higher bandwidth, etc) or minima (cost loss, lowering of risk, etc) of some objective function. The ultimate goal behind using operations research is to elicit a best possible solution to a problem mathematically, which improves or optimizes the performance of the system eliminating or at least reducing the bottlenecks therein.

About the Club

The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS) is a merger of two former organizations: Operations Research Society of America (ORSA) and the Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS). It is considered the largest professional society of operations research.

Here at the University of Arizona, we hope to involve students in the fields of OR/MS in social and academic activities to bring the UofA OR/MS community together.

The club hopes to bring people in the field of OR/MS around the UofA together. Those who are interested in knowing more about Operations Research/Management Sciences are encouraged to join our activities.
