Dorothy McKinney is employed by the Lockheed Martin Space & Strategic Missiles Operation. Currently she is a Fellow and Chief Software Architect. Dorothy helps the company to apply best practices and lessons learned from across Lockheed Martin and industry to meet immediate program needs and reduce risks, with special emphasis on software systems engineering challenges. Previously, Dorothy worked at Lockheed Martin headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland as Director of Technical Operations and Processes in the Information & Services Sector. This assignment followed one as Director of Software and Systems Processes reporting to Frank Lanza in Lockheed Martin's C3I & Systems Integration Sector (formerly Loral corporate). Dorothy began working for Lockheed Martin heritage companies in November, 1979. Her past assignments include helping to rescue a very large air traffic control program at Air Traffic Management in Rockville, Maryland. She started in the corporation as a systems engineer, later serving as Manager of Software Engineering, Director of Systems Engineering, and Executive Director of Engineering at Space and Range Systems in Sunnyvale, California.. From 1985 to 1994, Dorothy was also an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Engineering program at San Jose State University, teaching such subjects as Engineering Management and Software Project Management. Starting in 2002, Dorothy has been teaching a course on Requirements Engineering over the Internet for Portland State University. Other industry experience included three years at ARGOSystems (a Boeing subsidiary), and nine years at SRI International (formerly called Stanford Research Institute).

A 1972 graduate of Prescott College with a B.A. and double major in Systems Sciences and English, Dorothy also has a M.S. in Computer Engineering from Stanford University, and an M.B.A. from Pepperdine University. All of these degrees were completed while Dorothy was working full time.

Professional society membership includes INCOSE, IEEE and AIAA. Dorothy has been active in the International Council On System Engineering, INCOSE, since 1992, including chairing national working groups and a technical committee, developing a train-the-trainer tutorial for the 1994 Symposium, delivering tutorials to INCOSE chapters around the U.S., and participating in panels at INCOSE Symposia. She is a past president of the San Francisco Bay Area chapter, serves on the chapter Board of Directors and also has served on the INCOSE Board of Directors. She was the Technical Chair of the INCOSE 2002 Symposium. She was appointed to the IEEE Software Industrial Advisory Board in 2000, and contributes ideas and occasionally input to the IEEE Software magazine.
